German photographer Jens Uwe Parkitny has been documenting the facial tattoos of ethnic Chin women since 2001. He says that what makes the Chin, an ethnic minority living in northwestern Myanmar, unique today is that their ranks include the largest group of women that still bear facial tattoos.
Usually inked in puberty, the tattoos are applied to Chin girls with rattan thorns, which has led to comparisons with female circumcision. Parkitny agrees that there is a "fine line" between the two practices but says: "I saw something; I saw art in a face and wanted to capture it. It is not my job to judge it."

Tokyo has the world's most Michelin stars, but regional Indian cuisine is elusive, with most Indian restaurants in the capital relying on brightly colored, velvety curries such as marigold-hued butter chicken and almost always pairing such offerings with cheese naan sweetened for the Japanese palate.
But seek, and you shall find, writes Nikkei Asia's Jui Chakravorty, who describes how a trip around the Japanese capital can take diners on a best-in-class culinary journey from the southern Indian seaport town of Mangaluru to a bucolic village near the Bay of Bengal.

Elsewhere on the Life & Arts desk, we offer you a story about manga. AI translations of Japanese comics have stirred much debate on social media. Some people have supported the move to use AI, seeing it as a way to remove those they see as "left-wing localizers" ruining their favorite series with a "woke" agenda. |
